1. The Humane Society of the United States
These folks are the "largest animal protection organization" in the US. With more than 11 million supporters they work tirelessly to improve the lives of animals big and little. Their efforts range from legislative reform to animal rescue, and cruelty investigations to care programs including sanctuaries, shelters, rehab centers, clinics and more. 2. The Rainforest Alliance
With a unique approach this organization is working to "conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior." They've turned things on their heads and are helping protect forests by making conservation profitable. 3. Wounded Warrior Project
Started by a small group of veterans and their friends to help comfort soldiers returning from Iraq and Afganistan, this organization has grown into a national program to "foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded warriors in our nation's history." 4. Habitat for Humanity
"Habitat for Humanity believes that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live." Habitat was founded in 1976 and has since then built or repaired more than 800,000 houses. To learn more visit them at www.habitat.org.

5. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
This is a special place where doctors and researchers work in concert to treat and prevent cancer and other catastrophic diseases afflicting children. The hospital was started in 1962 by entertainer Danny Thomas and has been changing lives ever since. We think their job is a big and noble one. 6. Alzheimer's Association
The Association is the world leading nonprofit funder of Alzheimer research. Along with outreach, education, support groups and more staff and volunteers work to provide care and support for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's and other dementias. 7. Stand Up 2 Cancer
Only existing since 2008 this young organization is all about one thing - finding a cure for cancer. They are different in that their funds go directly to research, and that is even done in a unique way. They've created a model where researchers can truly collaborate rather than compete. 8. Feeding America
Working through a nationwide network of food banks this organization is out to fight hunger from coast to coast. As the largest domestic hunger-relief charity in the country they use their scale to advocate for the hungry and impact hunger related public policy, in addition to getting food to those in need.
